#Oolite miami restaurant professional
Our team is small but mighty and the amount of programming we offer for our artists here has been so rewarding – from our annual Ellies Award, where we give out $500,000 every year to working artists here in Miami to our curator talks, our year-round residencies and our on-going professional development programs. There, I oversee all the various aspects of programming that Oolite Arts offers to our Miami arts community and it’s been amazing getting to also work with my mentor, Dennis Scholl, who has been leading the charge. Most recently, I have the joy of being the VP of Programming at Oolite Arts (formerly known as ArtCenter South Florida). One, in particular, was building a half-pipe on the YoungArts plaza and had skateboard legend Mark Gonzales (“The Gonz”) skate the half-pipe in the pouring rain while we had jazz legend Jason Moran play a 30 min improv set that included Elton John’s “Benny and the Jets.” You can’t make this up! After five years at the Arsht, I became the Director of Campus and Alumni Programming for the National YoungArts Foundation and was able to program some wild and unforgettable events on that iconic Bacardi campus located on Biscayne Blvd.
Again, seeing the arts and culture scene grow in such a way has been a joy. The orchestra was conducted by Sam Hyken, who is now the co-founder of the ultra-popular NuDeco Ensemble. My favorite programming that I was able to produce was bringing a full-scale orchestra to accompany the hip-hop artist Talib Kweli. One of the best compliments I ever had for one of our programs.Īfter MOCA, I was able to work as the Programming Director at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and again was able to do many “firsts” there. Back then, Wynwood was predominantly a Puerto Rican neighborhood and I recall a bunch of the neighbors coming through and saying how this reminded them of the Bronx back in the days. We had local b-boy crew Flipside Kings host a breakdance battle and had DJ Maseo of DeLaSoul DJ the night. Part of my claim to fame while working at MOCA was I was able to produce one of the first arts organization-led block party in Wynwood back in 2005, long before Wynwood was the Wynwood that we know today.
You could say I was at the right place at the right time because I was able to really see the Miami art community flourish as it is today. Art Basel (the fair) just started coming and we were getting some national attention as a serious contemporary art hub during that time. The Miami art scene in 2003 was pretty fresh. I moved to Miami from NYC back in 2003 and I had the sheer luck of working as the Director of Public Programs at Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in North Miami.
